complete the streets
the streets of our cities and towns ought to be for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, bus rider or shopkeeper. but too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars, or worse, creeping traffic jams. they’re unsafe for people on foot or bike — and unpleasant for everybody. now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. states, cities and towns are asking their planners, engineers and designers to build road networks that welcome all citizens.

news of the weird
what exactly was he planning to do with 2,865 bicycles? mr. kenk’s legacy now fills a former police garage with a leaky roof. organized by brand name and mostly resting on their handlebars, wheels pointed upward, are 2,396 of the bicycles that police say mr. kenk either stole or arranged to have stolen. “he’s easily the most hated man in Toronto,” said alex jansen, a filmmaker who has been working on a documentary about mr. kenk for more than a year as part of a study of his rundown neighborhood’s transition...

moving targets?
we’ve had a car culture for so long and suddenly the roads become saturated with bicyclists trying to save gas. every year, the war of the wheels breaks out in the sweet summer months, as four-wheelers react with aggravation and anger to the two-wheelers competing for the same limited real estate. this summer, the number of new cyclists has increased strongly across the country. [note: in every state, cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles.]
